HISTORY: Friends 4 Recovery originated as a support group, one developed by Carla Beck and peers. The support group received a $5,000 grant to operate in Chesterfield County and, with that funding, offered transportation, peer support, guest speakers, and social functions for people with mental health challenges for two years.
Driven by a new dream, shortly after the beginning of the support group, Carla Beck then gathered peers and began the process of collecting data and applying for grant monies to support the opening of the area's first peer run center of a specific nature. It was to focus solely on personal wellness and it would be operated by and for people of differing cultures whose lives have been significantly impacted by mental health challenges. The beginning of the process included a Needs Assessment Survey delivered in English and in Spanish, which prompted 144 peer responses in the fall of 2008. The application process was long and tedious, and fruitful, since a $200,000 grant was awarded in February 2009 for the opening of the center. By July 2009 the Friends 4 Recovery Whole Health Center was open for business.
GOALS: to increase the quality of life and lifespan for people who have faced mental health challenges, support people in making healthy lifestyle choices, and provide services for culturally-diverse groups, minorities, and individuals with dual diagnosis.
FOCUS: Promoting choice, self-determination, moving beyond recovery into wellness and health and creating a meaningful life within the community.
